2022 F1 Season Review Part 1: P10 - Williams F1 Racing

Nick's Notebook:  2022 F1 Season Review Part 1: P10 - Williams F1 Racing

Drivers

Alex Albon and Nicholas Latifi, Nyck De Vries

Alex Albon finished 19th

Nicholas Latifi finished 20th

Per F1C Rules

Alex Albon finished 13th

Nicholas Latifi finished 19th

Williams F1 would have finished P9 in F1CC

F1C Rankings

Alex Albon - 15th

Nicholas Latifi - 20th

Nyck De Vries - 22nd (this ranking is purely mathematical and not representative of Nyck's result)

Summary

Alex scored a P10 in Australia in the third race, P9 in Miami in race 5, and a P10 in SPA

Alex got sick with appendicitis and had complications with the surgery and had to sit out of Monza…Nyck De Vries subbed in.  Finished P9…scoring points before Nicholas Latifi

Nicholas Latifi finally scored points in Japan, which was an absolute garbage race, and in my opinion on the level of Abu Dhabi 2021, just a much much cooler track.

Qualifying Part 1

Latifi was kicked out in Q1 in 21 races, and made Q3 at Silverstone.  Alex only made Q3 once (at Spa), but made it to Q2 7 other times (Bahrain, Canada, Austria, France, Zandvoort, COTA, Brazil).  De Vries made it to Q2 in 100% of his qualifying sessions, qualifying 13th in Monza, subbing in for the sick Alex.

Qualifying Part 2

Latifi qualified higher than 16th once, 10th at Silverstone, averaging a qualifying position of 18.5.

Alex qualified 11th 3 times,12th once, 14th once and 15th twice, 9th once (at Spa), missed one session at Monza, was DQ’d in Australia and Imola, and was kicked out in Q1 of the remaining races. Nyck De Vries made it to Q2 in his only Qualifying session of the season.

Starting Position

Latifi started 10th twice, 11th once, and 17th or lower every other race, averaging 17.3.

Alex started 6th, 8th, 12th, 13th, and 14th once each 15th, twice, and the remainder of the races 16th or lower.  Nyck De Vries started one race in 8th….

Qualifying vs. Starting Position

Latifi gained an average of 1.1 places from where he qualified to where he started, “improving” a total of 24 places over the season due to other penalties….it’s easy to improve when you’re at the back….

Alex improved 1 position over the entire season

Nyck De Vries improved 5 positions due to penalties

Starting vs. Finishing

Latifi improved an average of 1.6 places per race from where he started to where he finished.  He improved a total or 28 places over the season, 10 in Japan, and his worst was losing 7 places at Spa.

Alex improved 2.4 places per race, improving a total of 45 places over the season, with 10 in Australia and 9 in Miami.  He never lost more than 5 places (at COTA)

Nyck lost once place in his only race - starting 8th and finishing 9th.

Race Results

WIlliams had 3 9th-place finishes, once from each driver.  Those were Latifi and De Vries’s only points finish (Nyck had one race to Latifi’s 22).  Alex finished 10th twice, 11th once,12th 4 times, and 13th 5 times.  He was relatively close to the points in several races

Team Winner:

Latifi raced in 22 races and scored a total of 2 points.

Alex raced in 21 races and scored a total of 4 points but was on the verge in many many races

Nyck De Vries subbed in for Alex at the last minute on a Saturday and scored 2 points on his F1 debut.  Not to mention he unqualified his teammate Latifi by 3 places and only lost 1 place during the race from where he started vs. Latifi’s 5 places.  And he scored points before Latifi did in the season.  This performance may not have gotten him his first F1 drive for 2023, but it sure as heck didn’t hurt his chances.

Nyck De Vries is the overall winner
